Did you know that vaporizing cannabis leaves instead of burning them releases the same amount of the drug’s active ingredient? It’s true! Plus, it allows you to avoid inhaling the harmful toxins that comes with smoking it.
Because combustion products are not present when using a vaporizer, consuming weed in pill form, or consuming cannabis foods, this form of cannabis consumption is significantly better for your body.
There are two types of products that can be vaporized: marijuana oils (also called extracts or concentrates) and the marijuana plant (usually flowers/buds). Below we explore the differences between the products.
There is a ton of diversity of names and products under the cannabis oils category. Typically, all of these products have much higher THC contents than in the plant. There are, however, oils with very little THC and mostly CBD (non-intoxicating, medicinal cannabinoid) for those seeking pain relief.
Vaporizing the cannabis plant material is the recommended method of cannabis administration for medicinal users. Using this method does leave a chance, however, that you may in-fact inhale marijuana smoke. The way this can happen is from vape pens with poor temperature control, which leads to them heating up the cannabis to the point of combustion, thus contributing to smoke being formed.
There are currently 3 main types of devices for vaping marijuana products: table top vaporizers, vape pens and dab rigs.
Traditional Desktop Vaporizers
Vaporization of the cannabis plant through a desktop vaporizer is the safest method of inhaling cannabis. It is also the method most recommended for medicinal cannabis patients. Although recommended, this kind of device is neither portable, nor discrete, plus it can cost up to $600!
The benefit of desktop vaporizers is there precise temperature control, which heats the cannabis to just below the point of combustion, causing the active compounds to evaporate into a vapor, thereby reducing the harmful by-products of combustion. They also burn off less of the THC, resulting in stronger psychoactive effects.
Vape pens are a newer method for vaporizing marijuana. Vape pens are similar to e-cigarettes, designed to slowly heat oil cartridge contents to the point of vaporization. While they are marketed as convenient, safe and affordable, they are not tremendously consistent or reliable.
The typical “dab” set-up involves a handheld torch and a type of bong or water pipe with a heating element that allows fast vaporization of cannabis concentrates. The most common type of heating elements are a skillet and nails, usually made from titanium or quartz or sometimes glass. There are many different types of dab rigs, most cost than a few hundred dollars.
If you are interested in starting your vaping journey, make sure you research the different methods before ordering one particular device or product. Each item has its advantages and disadvantages, for example some vape pens come with a cannabis oil cartridge attached to it, and so once the oil is used up the whole device has to be thrown out.
And keep in-mind, smoking isn’t a good method of drug delivery because of its harmful effects, such as lung cancer and heart disease, which outweigh the merits of marijuana for all but terminal cases.
